How do I join the YMCA?  
Downloadable forms are available below. Bring your completed form to the local YMCA and we will be glad to help you get signed up.  (Please allow at least 20 minutes for this process).
 
What does ‘draft’ mean as a way to pay for a membership?
A draft is when you have your monthly payment debited on the 18th of the month. You can use your checking account, credit card, or debit card as a method of payment.

Is there a charge if I cancel my membership?
No, we do not charge you a fee to cancel your membership. We do not have “annual contracts” – you can cancel your membership at any time.

What’s the policy on bringing a guest?
Guests do not have to accompany a member. The cost is $7 (Basic) or $ 10 (Fitness) for an adult, $5 for a child and $20 for a family.

My college age child is home for two weeks and wants to use the Y. What do I do?
We offer a short-term guest pass in one week and one month increments.

Can my child’s grandparent/caregiver/nanny bring them to swim lessons?
Yes. Caregivers are able to accompany children to swim lessons and other Y programs. However, to use the Y without the children, s/he would need to have a membership.

Can I use other Y.M.C.A.s?
"Always Welcome At the YMCA". All members of the YMCA of Washington County Iowa become members of a nationwide association of people. When you are away from home, you will be welcomed and treated as a member by all participating YMCA’s. Be sure to ask about the A.W.AY. policy at the Y you are visiting. Fees and restrictions may apply.

Can I borrow a lock?

YMCA of Washington County Iowa offer locks to borrow at the membership desk. We will hold onto your membership card or car keys in exchange for a lock while you are here.

Can I rent a locker?
Yes. We rent 1/2 and limited number large lockers on a monthly basis (charged to your membership draft).

Do you have a towel I can use?
Yes. You can rent a towel for the day. Men’s & Women’s Fitness Center Memberships have this privilege.

Can I use the gym?Of course! Our basketball court is available to all members, so long as no class or program is using the space. 

Do I need to register for classes (like SPIN or boot camp)?
Yes, Members and non members can Please see the program guide or ask for details on an individual class.

Can I rent the pool for a party (or just rent a room)?
Yes. We have pool, room, and meeting room options available. Just ask at our membership desk for details.

How do I sign my kids up for swim lessons?
You can sign up at our membership desk.

Do you have a Whirlpool?
Yes, the in the Washington branch has whirlpool in both the [mens' and ladies']  only locker rooms.

Do you have a sauna?
Yes, the in the Washington branch has saunas in both the [mens' and ladies'] only locker rooms.

Do you have a squash or racquetball court?
Yes, there are squash and racquetball courts at the Washington Community YMCA.

How do I sign up for a fitness orientation?

You can sign-up for an appointment at our membership desk. If we don’t have something available in our schedule, we will have a fitness specialist call you directly.

Do I need to register for the classes, or are they drop-in?

All do require registration, do check at the front desk for details and schedule. You are welcome to drop-in on most of our group exercise classes for a fee.

Do I need to wear a swim cap in the pool?   No. We do ask you to tie back your hair if it is shoulder length or longer.

Do you offer private swim lessons?
Yes. We offer private and semi-private lessons, in addition to our group lessons. These are scheduled directly within the aquatics office.

Do I need to sign up for the water exercise classes?
Yes, Stop by the front desk and get details of all the classes.

Should I call ahead before I come in?
We try to minimize closures to the best of our ability so that you won’t have to call before you come in. However, you are welcome to do so if you would like. However, For weather-related closings/cancellations,check KCII Radio, our website at www.washingtony.org, washingtoncommunity y on Facebook,Washington Evening Journal website.When in doubt, please call ahead to make sure the YMCA is open and/or your program/class is still on.

What is open swim vs. lap swim on the schedule?
Lap swimming is consistent swimming back and forth in the pool. Open swim is available for those who want to do their own water exercise routine, families who want to ‘play’ in the water, etc.

When is the pool least busy/most busy?
For lap swimming, our busiest times are early in the morning and after school during the swim team season. Late morning, mid-day and late evening are quieter.

What are the requirements for kids in the pool who are not yet potty-trained?
Children need to wear two, tight fitting layers. This would include a swim diaper (Swimmers can be purchased at the front desk for $1.50 each). A bathing suit would not qualify as a tight fitting layer. This is very important. If we have an accident in the pool, we have to close it for 24 hours.

Can my child use the pool without me being present?
Your child can be unattended in the pool at 8 years or older – with an adult in the pool area. Your child must be 8 years or older to be in the YMCA without an adult.

Can I stay with my child at first to make sure he/she is comfortable?   Yes, of course! Our staff will be happy to work with you during any transitions.

Do you offer before and after school care or summer school age childcare?
Yes. We offer Kid Konnection during the school year at the elementary school. and summer we host Camp Gitche Manitou ( a weekly day camp for children Pre-K through 5th Grade.)

What activities do you offer that families can do together?
We offer a variety of special events geared towards young families throughout the year, such as our Halloween Party and Healthy Kids Day. Other activities include family fun nights, parents night out, family movie nights, and family swims. For families with older kids, we encourage you to take group exercise classes together, play basketball together on our basketball court, and find other healthy activities you enjoy together.
